Peter C. Erichsen, the vice pres and general cousel of the University of Pennsylvania, has had the much-covered death of 18-year-old gene therapy patient Jesse Gelsinger happen on his watch. Erichsen describes Gelsinger's death as a tragic event for the family and a serious event for the University, which has been at the forefront of gene therapy from the beginning.

Michael A Brizel, the vice pres and general counsel of the Reader's Digest Ass'n, Inc, the well-known global publisher and direct marketer of special interest magazines, books, videos and recorded music, manages 18 attorneys and employs outside counsel according to the expertise desired. Reader's Digest went through a series of reversals after going public in 1990 and is currently in a multi-stage program of reorganization and downsizing. Reader's Digest and Time Warner are discussing a joint venture that would combine certain titles and direct-marketing businesses.

John C McBride Jr, the senior vice pres and general counsel of Loews Cineplex Entertainment, one of the largest publicly traded motion picture exhibition companies in the world, boasting 2900 movie screens and $812.7 in income for the combined company's operations in the first 3 qtrs of 1999, has an emerging legal department formed from the two companies in 1998. The merger brought new challenges to the general counsel, including how much he wanted to add to overhead by employing new people and how to merge two legal departments.
