Jurors' rights endorsed; report says they should be allowed to take notes, submit questions
Article Abstract:
The legal community and a Ralph Nader organization, the Center for Study of Responsive Law, disagree about the efficacy of the jury system. An ABA/Brookings Institution report supports the system while recommending improvements such as permitting juror note-taking, limitations on annual service and increased use of visual exhibits. The Center has established a National Assn of Civil Jurors to present its viewpoint. The Center is concerned that inadequate ABA support for the jury system could lead to misgivings about the efficacy of juries.

The tangled web; when ethical misconduct becomes legal liability
Article Abstract:
Legal malpractice suits are on the increase. The largest malpractice claims in US legal history have all been filed in the last seven years. Nonclient malpractice suits have increased the most, with malpractice suits arising from the savings and loan crisis accounting for much of that increase. These are suits against law firms which represented accounting firms or savings and loans embroiled in that crisis. Lawyers employed by large law firms with adequate malpractice insurance are the most likely to be sued.

Jury system alive and well; symposium endorses active role, better conditions for civil jurors
Article Abstract:
A Jun 1992 symposium on civil juries held by the Center for Jury Studies of the National Center for State Courts found much support for the use of juries, with suggestions of new techniques to help juries understand complex litigation. Other recommendations included letting jurors assume a more active role in trial, liberalizing evidence rules so that more information would be accessible to jurors, using more technology, and selecting juries that better represent communities.
