Justice for all - all for justice; making the system work for everyone
Article Abstract:
The US in 1992, does not provide equal access to justice, and steps must be taken to remedy this fact. The ABA's Special Committee on Funding the Justice System has completed a study indicating that the system suffers from uneven funding and funding shortages. Budgets for the court system were reduced in 25 states in 1991, 30 to 35 states had inadequate budgets, 23 states have furloughed or laid off court employees, and 10 states stopped accepting civil filings due to backlogs. Efforts for reform must originate at the grassroots level.

Pro bono legal services became more widely available during the 1980s and today number more than 900 nationwide. In spite of the growing number of programs, studies show that only 15 to 17% of lawyers render organized pro bono services. The ABA Annual Pro Bono Conference and Center for Pro Bono are trying to address problems cited by lawyers in performing pro bono work such as lack of time and support staff and lack of knowledge of poverty law.
