Justices feud in Wash. state; a once-collegial court is now rife with publicly aired animosities
Article Abstract:
The Washington state Supreme Court was at one time time very quiet and collegial, but the court's 109th year of existence is marked by many disagreements. Justice Richard B. Sanders gave a speech at an anti-abortion rally on the day he was sworn in, prompting a ruling by a 9-member panel of appellate judges on whether it was ethical for Sanders to have done so. Sanders decided to run for the high court because of his experience doing appellate work, and he had also been active in conservative Republican politics. Other judges waged vigorous election campaigns, with appearances at many political events.

Courts OKs forced DNA test
Article Abstract:
The Washington Supreme Court has, with its decision in Washington v. Olivas, become the first state to endorse compulsory DNA testing for everyone convicted of violent crimes or sexual offenses. This testing will be used to construct a DNA data base for criminal identification purposes. The court held the testing to be constitutional under the equal protection standard due to the rational link between the DNA testing law and law enforcement.

Client-conflicts patrols march on
Article Abstract:
Law firms and sole practitioners are increasingly wary of potential conflicts of interests. Large firms often employ a conflicts expert to screen potential clients and new associates or partners. More corporate clients are demanding full investigation into possible conflicts before retaining a law firm. Some attorneys find themselves so at-risk for potential conflicts they have to relocate.
