Kirkland & Ellis partners depart; to form new boutique
Article Abstract:
The litigation boutique of Bartlit Beck Herman Palenchar and Scott, a spinoff of Chicago's Kirkland and Ellis, will open in that city and in Denver, CO on Oct 23, 1993. Fred H. Bartlit, Jr., a key litigator and seven other partners left Kirkland to form the new firm. While at Kirkland, Bartlit was defending General Motors Corp in a number of suits regarding the company's allegedly fire-prone trucks, and the status of these cases is uncertain. The boutique hopes to institute a new kind of billing which emphasizes partners' knowledge and skills rather than amount of associate time spent on a case.

The ax falls at Chicago firms; under client demands
Article Abstract:
A Hildebrandt survey found that 60% of the nation's largest law firms had asked partners to withdraw in the last 18 months. Two-thirds of those firms and more than half of all respondents expected to ask partners to leave during the next 18 months. Chicago's Winston and Strawn and Rudnick and Wolfe are examples of this trend. Firms are also changing their billing structure by negotiating fixed fees with clients at the start of an undertaking.

'Invasion' of Chicago stops cold; in the end, just a few outside firms dared to enter
Article Abstract:
Chicago has not become a city in which outside law firms seem eager to open branches in contrast to cities such as New York and Los Angeles which have become a mecca for outside firms. Observers ascribe this to Chicago's reputation of being hostile to outside firms. The recession has also played a part in the lack of law firm expansion. Some outside firms have established a presence in Chicago through mergers with local firms.
