Lawyer's role in accidents called murder; prosecutor says lawyer took on allegedly staged incidents; his defense says there's no case
Article Abstract:
A Los Angeles Superior Court prosecutor alleges that personal injury sole practitioner Gary P. Miller accepted cases involving staged auto accidents and paid fees for the cases' referrals. In one such accident, four immigrants were involved, and one died when a tractor-trailer fell on an automobile. Miller's defense is that he tried not to take on questionable cases and that he was the victim of his office manager and of lying clients. Harland Braun, Miller's attorney, also says that capping, or paying referral fees, may qualify as a misdemeanor but at another level it is accepted although not admired.

Feds raid Miami lawyer offices: Medicare fraud probe said to be the reason; files, computers taken
Article Abstract:
Florida attorneys are disturbed by the second law enforcement raid on an attorney's office in 1995 during which files and computers were taken. The raid was based on the attorney's alleged participation in Medicare fraud but the attorney's attorney says that files other than those pertaining to the investigation were taken. US Attorney Kendall Coffey supports the raids because he feels no profession should be above the law and therefore above investigation. However, other attorneys feel that the raids will undermine clients' confidence in their attorneys' ability to maintain confidentiality.
