Legal secretary of lawyer lite? Growing use of paralegals raises questions about their function
Article Abstract:
A survey report by the ABA Standing Committee on Legal Assistants released in Sept 1998 found that nearly two-thirds of attorneys make use of paralegals, with the practice omnipresent in firms of more than 100 lawyers, and decreasing for smaller firms. Paralegals have a wider variety of tasks in smaller firms, ranging from drafting documents to interviewing clients, while those at bigger firms have mainly routine tasks. Paralegals are helping lawyers provide better and more economical service to clients.
