Lincoln as lawyer: a portrait: a new book sheds light on his legal career. Here, its author speaks
Article Abstract:
A new biography of Abraham Lincoln draws heavily on the Lincoln Legal Papers to offer an unprecedented view of him as a lawyer. In his 24 years in practice, Lincoln showed himself to be a great lawyer through hard work, intense scholarship, logical arguments that often invoked common sense, and when needed, emotional appeals. The book, 'Lincoln,' by David Herbert Donald, appears on Oct 16, and is the first to rely on the Papers. These offer new insights, including the only known transcript of a case in which Lincoln was involved.

Recruiters see a warm front over horizon; a thaw could be developing in the legal job market
Article Abstract:
Some areas of the legal job market are starting to recover from the recession, but there is also pressure on associates to bring clients to the firm at an earlier point in their tenure. There is still a strong demand for lawyers in the areas of intellectual property and litigation. Patent lawyers have enhanced marketability if they have a technical undergraduate degree. The job supply has declined in the areas of environmental and international law.

Olin cuts in-house legal staff; the trend of the '90s?
Article Abstract:
The Olin Corp has decided after an internal study to downsize its corporate legal department and apportion the legal work among a group of six firms. The company will also try out alternative billing methods such as fixed prices and blended rates. With these changes, Olin joins a group of manufacturers who are finding it more cost-effective to have relationships akin to joint ventures with a few outside vendors rather than multiple competitors.
