Automation should pay for itself; productivity
Article Abstract:
Law firms wishing to recover their investment in automation must draw up a financial plan before beginning the process. The plan should decide the amortization period for the fixed costs of the capital investment, and for most hardware and software this should be four years. The next step is to select a reasonable return on the investment to add to the total cost. In order to recover its expenses, the firm must evaluate the effects of automation on support staff and lawyers by re-examining job descriptions and compensation rates.

Software should aid specialists; non-lawyer experts can provide much support
Article Abstract:
Non-legal support staff functions can be divided among support staff and performed most effectively using specialized software. Time-and-billing software will not only help with accounting functions but also with predicting costs associated with a particular case. Other software packages help with marketing, document generation and on-line research. All of these components can help lawyers access any information easily on their desktop computers and provide clients with the most efficient service.
