Moscow work goes forward amid grief; a sniper kills a U.S. lawyer, and others worry about the future
Article Abstract:
American law firms with branches in Moscow have been in a state of alert during the violent showdown between President Boris N. Yeltsin and his political foes. Terry Duncan, a lawyer with Firestone, Duncan and Associates and Julie Brooks, a paralegal at Baker and McKenzie's Moscow office, were both shot by snipers. LeBoeuf, Lamb, Leiby and MacRae had to abandon its office in the Mayoral Building, the center of the violence. Baker says they still have young people with an interest in Russia who would like to work there and become more fluent in Russian.

Corporate counsel defend attorney-client privilege; federal cases test perception that judges view an in-house lawyer as jack-of-all-trades who gets no blanket coverage
Article Abstract:
Gergia Pacific Corp v GAF Roofing Manufacturing Corp is an example of recent federal cases in which the courts chose at times to deny attempts to extend the attorney-client privilege to non-legal work done by corporate counsel. In Georgia-Pacific the coiurt denied the privilege to instances where it thought the corporate counsel was serving as a negotiator rather than as a legal adviser. There is a long-standing belief that judges are stricter about letting corporate counsel invoke the privilege.
