Mind over market; investors shouldn't let bullish expectations derail long-term investment plans
Article Abstract:
Investors should concentrate on achieving realistic goals over the long term and not be sidetracked by the illusory gains the stock market achieved during the decade starting with the late 1980s. Favorable tax changes and corporate restructurings boosted corporate profits, while an influx of new money into the market drove stock valuations even higher. Professional investment planners advise clients to choose an investment policy which delivers the best combination of expected return and amount of risk a client is comfortable with.

Knowing when to let go: timing the stock market can make the most of gains, minimize losses
Article Abstract:
Timing the stockmarket can help investors avoid slides in prices while maximizing gains, but it has been a poor strategy for the past 15 years. Experts say that since Aug 1982 staying fully invested has been the best strategy, but that during that time the market has been outperforming its own long-term averages, and that lower growth is probably ahead. For investors with a short-term investment horizon and little tolerance for losing principal, market timing can offer a better risk-adjusted value.

Time to face the bear? The stock market can't run up forever. Lawyers betting their futures on it may want to diversify to avoid the knockout
Article Abstract:
Lawyers may want to diversify their investment portfolios and take some of their money out of stocks in the knowledge that the bull market cannot last forever and it is unwise to bet personal futures on it. Possibilities include fixed-income securities such as bonds or preferred stocks, convertibles, foreign securities, real estate, and precious metals.
