Network Troubles
Article Abstract:
A discussion of several minor problems related to installing a network file server computer is presented. Initial problems stem from the sporadic arrival of custom-ordered components that are unassembled. Other problems are attributed to a lack of expertise needed to build a system. Obtaining functional ISA VGA video cards is a another prominent difficulty facing the user. The arrival of the PC Power and Cooling's Monster Steel Case (MSC) is blamed for several unforseen problems. The heavy MSC and dual power supply, which includes an abundance of wires and connection possibilities, costs almost $1,500, but its directions and installation information are inadequate. Although the system includes many fans, the hard drive cage is tightly packed and poorly ventilated. The case does not ship with enough of the proprietary drive rails and matching screws needed to mount the hard drives, and although the unmounted drives operate in a test bench arrangement, they disappear when they are mounted in the file server.
