Tobacco industry litigation continues and includes a Justice Department lawsuit seeking reimbursement for federal expenses for the treatment of tobacco-related illnesses, the first of what is likely to be a series of suits by labor union health care plans, and even suits by Central and South American countries seeking reimbursement for medical costs. The suits by labor union trust funds set up to provide members' medical benefits allege violation of state and federal RICO statutes and conspiracy, also claiming that the tobacco industry targets blue collar workers..
