Paths less traveled: The Circuit Court tours the Net's back alleys
Article Abstract:
Useful Web sites that are not strictly related to legal services are identified and described. For example, www.ace-alibi.com provides a useful phone answering service. For reference services of all types, www.refdesk.com is recommended. Some legal-services sites, such as Katsuey's Legal Gateway, at www.katsuey.com, are also identified.

Voice of the future
Article Abstract:
Voice recognition software, such as IBM's ViaVoice or Dragon Systems' DragonDictate package, are much improved, and some industry observers say these products are finally ready for prime time. For a price of less than $300, they say, law offices can finally consider replacing their dictaphones. Others remain skeptical, doubting that voice recognition is sufficiently reliable. Powerful hardware is advantageous. Specifications only call for a Pentium 133 and 32MB of system memory, but this should be regarded as minimal, and performance with a 133MHz chip will be slow. However, Pentium 200 systems with 64MB of RAM have come down in their price and can now be purchased for less than $2,000. A fast hard drive is also necessary for good performance.

Fighting back against buggy programs
Article Abstract:
There are only two industries in which customers are referred to as 'users', and the software industry is one of them. Software licenses actually disclaim their products abilities to do anything and refuse the right of the customer to return the product. Some software vendors purposefully ship products before the bugs are identified, leaving that task to the 'user'. Then they charge high rates for 'support' services that should not have been necessary. The Uniform Commercial Code Drafting Committee for Article 2b will offer a new approach to software licensing during the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws in the summer of 1998. The 2Bguide, A Guide to the Proposed Law on Software Transactions: Draft UCC Article 2B Licenses is available at a Web site (www.Software-industry.org/issues/guide/).
