Payers mold health care lawyering; market forces boost M&A, ERISA and fraud work
Article Abstract:
The rapid pace of change in the health care industry has meant opportunities for lawyers in specialties including antitrust, mergers and acquisitions, ERISA pre-emption and white-collar crime. The increase in health maintenance organizations (HMOs) brought about many of these opportunities. HMOs cut the number and length of hospital stays and hospitals sought alliances with each other to remain competitive. This brought the scrutiny of federal antitrust regulators, and the interest in mergers attracted M&A experts. Prominent health care lawyers are listed.
