Court reporters face new tech: profits possible only for the best
Article Abstract:
Real-time transcription software has come on the market for court reporters but only the most computer-literate are able to use it. Reporters who use it must be not just quick typists, but consult a dictionary of names and technical terms frequently used so that these words appear automatically with just a few keystrokes. Reporters can only clean up any errors if there is no time pressure, but the technique has raised expectations and attorneys want an error-free transcript right away.

When high-tech is over the top: is a CD-ROM brief fair or foul?
Article Abstract:
The US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit is the first court to have received a brief filed on CD-ROM. The litigation is a patent case about a dental process, and the brief and all exhibits are on the CD-RoM. All relevant material can be viewed on the CD-ROM, and the judges do not have to interrupt their reading to view the exhibits on the VCR. Attorneys for the opposite side are unhappy as they feel such fancy technology makes the playing field uneven.
