J David Cabello, the senior vice pres, general counsel and secretary of Compaq Computer Corp, has department of 40 attorneys in the company's Houston headquarters and other attorneys working at company sites globally. Compaq is still working on its merger with Digital Equipment Corp which would make it the second largest computer company in the world, behind just IBM Corp. Cabello sees the firm's relationship with outside counsel as long-term, and he relies on various firms. Sometimes he asks them to share Compaq's risk by taking a contingency fee.

Robert C Hinckley, the general counsel of Xilinx Inc, whose products are widely used for data processing and networking, and in the defense, commercial aviation, telecommunications and medical equipment industries and which boasted 1998 revenues of $613.6 mil, suggested to lawyers interested in working for Silicon Valley companies that they become grounded in today's technology. One of the company's products is "intellectual property," which at Xilinx refers to a function that can be added to a chip by the purchaser.

California's sunny economy is growing partners; San Francisco Bay area firms are elevating more to partner as work is booming
Article Abstract:
California law firms are promoting attorneys to the partner-level at a very fast rate due to the state's successful economy. The 1990's have seen good conditions for business in the state and this has influenced legal business. The Silicon Valley has been a stellar example of success. Wilson, Sonsini, Goodrich and Rosati and Cooley Godward L.L.P. have been active representing the Valley's business.
