Prison suit over - for now
Article Abstract:
The long-running Texas prison reform lawsuit has finally been settled, but victim's rights groups are raising objections. The Texas attorney general's office welcomed the agreement, saying that it finally returns control of the prisons to the state. The case began in 1974 and eventuated in a year-long trial ending Sep 1979, which declared incarceration in the Texas penal system to be cruel and unusual punishment, hence unconstitutional. This led to a decade of restructuring under a special master. Victim's rights groups claim that the settlement will continue the early release of dangerous criminals.

A squeeze play backfires; Chrysler Corp. tactics against plaintiff lawyer draw attention to air-bag case
Article Abstract:
Chrysler Corp may have won the battle but lost the strategic war in a Sherman, TX suit alleging injury caused by a toxic chemical in an auto air bag. The case drew widespread notice, and numerous questions about potential harm from air bags, after Chrysler applied pressure to lawyer E Todd Tracy, who was assisting plaintiff's counsel Steven C Laird in the case. Apparently Chrysler refused to negotiate settlements on other cases in which Tracy was the sole counsel, so he stepped out of Laird's case, changing the strategy.
