Protectionism to promote culture: South Korea and Japan, a case study
Article Abstract:
The joint efforts of South Korea and Japan to promote their economies and preserve their cultures by establishing bilateral and regional trade agreements are discussed. Topics include the rationales for preserving culture and the difficulties of preservation when domestic industries cannot complete with foreign imports.

The authors discuss corporate governance reforms of the Hyundai Group, designed to counterbalance the powers of the group chairman with powers granted to the board of directors and foreign institutional investors. The role of family controlled groups, or chaebols, in large Korean corporations is described.
