Speaking of firsts ... First Amendment free-speech cases may turn into blockbusters
Article Abstract:
Some of the free speech cases on the US Supreme Court's calendar for the 2000-2001 term are described. Issues in the cases include intercepted telephone calls, adult bookstores, ballot requirements, and government-funded lawyers. Bartnicki v. Vopper, which may be the key First Amendment case this term, also involves privacy.

Cigs, 'shrooms and speech; advertisers wait hopefully for Court review of commercial speech doctrine
Article Abstract:
Lorillard Tobacco Co. v. Reilly and Altadis U.S.A., Inc. v. Reilly, pending cases the Supreme Court could use to strengthen the commercial speech doctrine, are discussed. The cases involve the advertising of cigarettes and mushrooms, the latter the constitutionality of requiring mushroom producers' contributions to a generic advertising program.

Prurient protections, prohibitions; this term's free speech cases involve sexually oriented expression
Article Abstract:
The freedom-of-speech cases on the 2001-2002 docket of the Supreme Court are discussed. In Ashcroft v. ACLU, the court will probably uphold the constitutionality of the Child Online Protection Act of 1998. In Ashcrpft v. the Free Speech Coalition, the court will decide whether virtual child pornography is entitled to First Amendment protection.
