Rediscovering ethics: back to basics
Article Abstract:
Ethical standards are essential for the insurance industry because it is a business built on honesty and trust while agents with an ethical reputation are more likely to get referrals and repeat business. The standards need to be set based on consumer expectation with the law being the minimum standards possible. Ethics should be part of every sales training course, helping agents determine the ethical approach. Some agents feel vulnerable when indicating another's ethical violations but responding to poor ethics is necessary to promote change.

Ethical awareness - not ethical reeducation
Article Abstract:
Insurance agents need to be trained in new legal and regulatory guidelines that effect their industry but ethical retraining is not an issue since the industry's ethics have always been firmly grounded. Awareness of currently existing ethical guidelines should be promoted, but treating ethics as something that needs to be developed because of pressure from outside the industry devalues a long history of ethical service.
