Revolving door?
Article Abstract:
The legal profession needs clearer guidelines on the transition from government service to private practice dealing with related cases, clients, and issues. The June 5, 1995, indictment of six Miami lawyers, several of them former federal prosecutors, who represent members of the Cali cartel highlights the problem, though defense lawyers claim the government agencies involved are acting vindictively and capriciously. The war approach to drugs exacerbates tensions and can lead both sides to overlook sensitive ethical points that should guide their actions.

Cocaine ring defendants want separate trials; appearing with accused Cali drug dealers may taint them, lawyers say
Article Abstract:
Lawyers charged with illegally aiding the Cali cartel to import cocaine and violating other laws are seeking a separate trial. Attorneys for William Moran, Michael Abbell, and Donald Ferguson claim their clients cannot get a fair trial seated with the other 60 defendants named, and that the predicted nine-month length of that trial would bankrupt them. Prosecutors say the defendants imported 80% of the cocaine that entered the US since the mid-1980s, or about 200,000 kilos. The judge appears sympathetic to the lawyers.

Piper Aircraft flies with new 'owners' - crash claimants; attorneys say plan is model for beleaguered companies
Article Abstract:
Piper Aircraft emerged from four years of Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on July 10, 1995, with 25% ownership by the Piper Aircraft Irrevocable Trust, representing present and future crash claimants. Investment firm Dimeling, Schreiber & Park owns 50%, and top creditor Teledyne Industries owns the rest. The trust has stock, $42 million in notes, and a $30 million fund, and is designed to survive large judgments. The new arrangement makes claimants submit to mediation first, and encourages arbitration.
