Sneak attack on U.S. inventiveness. (revocation of long-standing rule against patenting "business methods")
Article Abstract:
Judges have revoked the long-standing rule against patents for business-methods, and few commentators have anticipated the wide-ranging political consequences. It would now be foolhardy to start a new business venture, especially one involving electronic commerce, without first checking to make sure no business methods not already used by someone else are contemplated. The severe penalties for patent infringement, including punitive damages and attorney fees, could force a new business to stop operation.
