ELAN Software's $295 GoldMine contact manager makes it easier for users to record the contacts they make. Users enter the contact name and other information in the contact record. The record can be edited to display extra fields for relevant information. GoldMine can be set to automatically generate a letter of introduction as soon as the contact record is filled out. GoldMine uses the stored information to produce documents with correct addresses and names. GoldMine can also create e-mail messages, scheduled events and faxes. Lawyers can set up a docket system in which GoldMine uses a court date to automatically schedule meetings, proceedings and filings. Each contact record has tabs linked to supplemental information. GoldMine can track the documents produced for a specific record. The calendaring feature supports group scheduling, event filters and dragging and dropping. GoldMine is optimized to work with laptops.

Goldmine Software's $295 Goldmine for Windows 95 contact manager is an excellent tool for managing large amounts of information, but it lacks global editing functions. The organization is also awkward, forcing users to switch between views to retrieve information related to a particular client. On the positive side, Goldmine's standard address files are supplemented by data folders that may be customized. The calendaring features help users note court appearances and document due dates, as well as set up meetings. The program supports automatic event scheduling, and it can create preliminary documents from templates. Information is stored in a record that also notes where data is stored. A calendar view lets users manage their own schedules and track company calendars. The activity view organizes tasks into 11 categories, and the topic view displays an outline along with details on any highlighted item.
