States take up 'speedy' uniform adoption law; critics say model act restricts the rights of biological parents
Article Abstract:
Legislation introduced in six states would enact the Uniform Adoption Act to speed up and make more fair the adoption process, especially guaranteeing its finality. Opponents, including the Child Welfare League of America, the Natl Assn of Social Workers, and the Natl Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, say the measure too heavily favors adoptive parents. Backers, including the American Bar Assn, say it strikes a much-needed balance. In 1992 127,441 children were adopted.

Storm brews over ADR; labor lawyers threaten boycott of ADR firms handling forced arbitrations
Article Abstract:
The Natl Employment Lawyers Assn threatens to boycott alternative dispute resolutions that handle disputes involving companies requiring employees to sign arbitration agreements. The group's executive committee will decide on Nov 1 on a boycott, which would affect JAMS Endispute and the American Arbitration Assn. Those ADR groups say such a boycott would have affect only about 1% of their cases, and that the debate concerns public policy, which they are not empowered to make.

The world according to... law firms celebrate themselves in self-penned histories that may be the ultimate in vanity press
Article Abstract:
The trend in law firms to write and self-publish the firm's history can end up as a self-congratulatory marketing tool, but an honest firm history can teach important lessons about public policy and management. A record of past achievements can be an important morale booster at a time when the legal profession is poorly thought of. In a more general sense, history can be an important tool for understanding the present and planning for the future.
