Studies: community release works; easing transition from hospital to freedom helps keep mentally ill out of trouble
Article Abstract:
Not-guilty-by-reason-of-insanity acquittees in many states are supervised in community release programs, and a California study comparing a group in a community release and one of individuals serving their whole sentences in psychiatric hospitals found the former were 22.5% less likely to be rearrested during the followup period. The group lost this advantage when rehospitalization entered the equation, however, since nearly 21% of them were rehospitalized. An Oregon study also found that participants in a conditional release program had fewer arrests.

Slicing the pie: business firms force some firms to change partner pay structures
Article Abstract:
Some law firms are responding to more cost-conscious customers and other business realities by changing the way they pay partners. Formerly, partners were paid based on rainmaking and billing but now more long-term goals are taken into consideration. These include work which may help a firm grow over the long run, sharing clients or helping develop a new firm specialty. A new emphasis on efficiency responds to clients' increasing cost-consciousness. Lawyers who are team players are valued.
