Patricia T Gonsalves is the general counsel of the United Way of America, provider of services and general guidance to those whose mission involves raising money for health and human service causes nationwide. United Way member organizations collectively raised $3.4 bil in 1997-98 campaigns. Gonsalves is United Way's sole in-house lawyer, and her job includes ensuring compliance with the applicable tax laws, devising strategies for trademark enforcement and compliance, and handling employment and corporate governance issues.

Charles R Lotter, the executive vice pres, secretary and general counsel of the JC Penney Co, known across the US for its department store chain, has a department of 70 in-house attorneys, with 43 in the legal department and the rest in specialties such as real estate, direct-marketing services and government relations. JC Penney also has 2900 Eckerd drugstores and has decided to issue a new class of stock to reflect the performance of the Eckerd subsidiary.
