The BNL squeeze; prosecutor gets caught in the intrigue surrounding the case
Article Abstract:
Gale McKenzie, asst US attorney in Atlanta, was the first prosecutor in the deeply politicized Banco Nazionale del Lavoro (BNL) case. The case charges former BNL official Christopher Drogoul with being in charge of $5 billion in illegal loans made to Iraq and to foreign companies involved in transactions with Iraq between 1987 and 1989. The case is overlaid with charges that the federal government ignored these loans due to a desire to placate Saddam Hussein. There have been charges that Drogoul became the scapegoat for a wide conspiracy. McKenzie has been replaced as prosecutor by Terry Hart.
