The second woman justice; Ruth Bader Ginsburg talks candidly about a changing society
Article Abstract:
Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the second woman to take her place on the US Supreme Court, experienced sex discrimination early in her legal career and became a major figure in the fight against that practice during the 1970s. On the issue of abortion, she believes that medical advances will increasingly place the termination of pregnancy in a woman's own hands and make the law irrelevant. Her view of conciliation and dialogue as more effective than conflict is evident in her legal career. She hopes that the caring and humanity attributed to women lawyers will spread to men as well.

Now that it's over; winners and losers in the confirmation process
Article Abstract:
The Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings made winners out of black conservatives and conservative advocacy groups, and losers out of liberal and feminist groups. Bar members hope to change the confirmation process. Black conservatives feel they gained the national spotlight and demonstrated that the black community is not ideologically monolithic. Liberal organizations were unable to repeat their defeat of Robert Bork. Feminists hope the perceived maltreatment of Anita Hill will mobilize more women to activism.
