Trial lawyers set to get tough: at ATLA convention, group is told to 'get the message out' on tort bill

Leaders of the Assn of Trial Lawyers of America vowed at the group's annual meeting to keep up their fight against tort reform and launch an attack-ad campaign against the insurance industry. The group's new president, Pamela Liapakis, said it must follow the public's mood of anger against wrongdoers, and added she will work full-time against tort reform. Bill looms as ATLA gathers; parties also on agenda

The Assn of Trial Lawyers of America (ATLA) holds its 1992 meeting as a tort reform battle and the Product Liability Fairness Act, which would preempt state laws, loom in Congress. The group meets Jul 25 to 30 in Washington, DC. ATLA firsts this year include the organization's first woman president, Iowa's Roxanne B. Conlin, and the election of someone from the minority caucus to the ATLA Board of Governors.

ATLA alters stance on implants
Article Abstract:
The Association of Trial Lawyers of America (ATLA) has reversed its position on use of class actions in breast implant cases. ATLA had been critical of the stand against class action suits by the ATLA Breast Implant Litigation Group, led by Karen Koskoff. There is speculation that product liability bills being considered in Congress may have the association wanting to protect their image.
