INS will upgrade its detainees' treatment; it promises lawyers access, end to routine strip searches
Article Abstract:
Improvements promised in the rights of thousand of aliens detained by the Immigration and Naturalization Service are discussed. Included are assured access to attorneys and no routine strip searches before and after such visits. The number of such detainees has more than doubled in four years.

Article Abstract:
Reasons for the delays in implementing standards regarding advising detained aliens facing deportation of their right to consult a lawyer are discussed. These standards come in response to a rise in the number of people in INS custody from 8,200 in 1997 to an average of 20,000.

A government challenge to a Clinton era law protecting national forests from logging and from new roads is discussed.
