Voluntary euthanasia and the risks of abuse: can we learn anything from the Netherlands?
Article Abstract:
Data from the Netherlands on voluntary euthanasia indicates that the risk of abuse from legalized euthanasia may be slight. Euthanasia is illegal in the Netherlands although the courts do not prosecute for it. Policies to prevent abuses could include psychological evaluation and counseling to protect patient choice. Professional and institutional abuse could be prevented by policies including prohibition of fees, documentation, reporting requirements and retrospective data for indices of abuse.

Special ethical issues in the management of PVS patients
Article Abstract:
It is proper to stop or triage life-sustaining care for persistent vegetative state (PVS) patients. PVS patients are not really persons on moral grounds but simply not dead. It is more difficult to justify an end to nutrition and hydration or active euthanasia, and a request for care can be justified, but economic considerations or questions of provider integrity are valid for stopping care.

The morality of physician-assisted suicide
Article Abstract:
Physician-assisted suicide is justifiable in some cases. It is opposed on grounds that it contradicts the medical profession, it is immoral, it is unnecessary and it would lead to mistrust and abuses. It can be supported as alleviation of suffering, giving patient control, facing medical reality, minimizing harm to people and acting out of compassion.
