Was this term historic; maybe, say some, but none of its big rulings was seen as a true landmark
Article Abstract:
The 1996-97 US Supreme Court term produced several important decisions, particularly with regards to federalism and governance issues, but it may not be judged as an historic term. The Court decided to strike down the Religious Freedom Restoration Act and part of the Brady gun law, while finding no constitutional basis for suicide assistance. While issues such as separation of powers, federalism, and congressional constitutional authority predominated the agenda, there were relatively fewer criminal matters. Statistics on voting patterns, unanimous decisions, 5-4 decisions, and lower court reversal rates are presented.
