Stephanie W Abramson, the executive vice pres, general counsel and secretary at Young and Rubicam Inc, heads a department of 11 attorneys and 10 clearance specialists, who review advertising content for adherence to network standards and lack of copyright problems. The advertising agency has about 5,500 accounts, of which 40 or so are key corporate accounts, global or multinational accounts involving more than one operating unit. One primary lawyer and one clearance specialist handles each key account. The lawyer makes sure there is substantiation for the advertising claims.

Lawrence A. Smith, the vice-president-legal and secretary of The Home Depot Inc, the country's largest home improvement retailer, heads a department of 15 attorneys, with 11 att company headquarters in Atlanta and the rest in other locations. Home Deport recently settled an employee class action alleging gender bias in one of the largest sex-discrimination settlements in US history. The company admitted no wrongdoing but agreed to pay $65 mil to the women involved, $22.5mil to their attorneys and $17 mil for various other reasons.
