What are ethics?
Article Abstract:
Ethics are defined by each individual's moral standards which means that two opposing decisions could both be ethically correct for the people making them. This is problematic in the insurance industry because those decisions, based on the agents' personal biases, affect the lives of their clients. Therefore, insurance agents should provide clients with options to help them make the decisions and should only offer products the agents would buy for themselves. The needs of the client should always be put before the needs of the agents even when it means losing a large commission.

Quality, not quantity counts
Article Abstract:
The American Society of CLU & ChFC is working toward turning insurance agents into professionals. However, this goal requires emphasizing quality over quantity, a focus not found often in the insurance industry. The Society is organizing educational programs to train agents in the complicated insurance policies. The public has started to look for agents who are able to clearly explain the products and process to them, and trained agents can do this while retraining the public to view insurance salespeople as professionals.

The right thing ... the right way
Article Abstract:
A statement of professional behavior attributed to Marshall Field is analyzed with specific reference to the insurance-production business. Its key admonitions are 'To do the right thing at the right time, in the right way,' or to place the client's interests first; 'To do things better than they were ever done before,' or to place quality before quantity; to constantly pursue education and mastery of the field; and 'To be satisfied with nothing short of our very best.'
