Which way ABA? Pondering new policy directions
Article Abstract:
The early 1990s see the ABA struggling with the issue of whether the association should deal only with substantive issues directly affecting the administration of justice or assume a broader role and speak to social issues as well. This issue came to a head when the ABA House of Delegates endorsed federal pro-choice legislation at the association's 1992 convention. Several thousand members resigned in protest, charging that the association had become politicized. The ABA also faces a more diverse body of attorneys as increasing numbers of women and minorities join the profession.

Head count; ABA membership levels remain steady in difficult year
Article Abstract:
ABA membership for the years 1992-93 dropped by 1.4 %. Officials were encouraged that the news was not worse and felt that the ABA might even be doing better than other professional associations. Reasons for the membership drop included the recession and displeasure at policy positions taken by the House of Delegates, particularly the pro-choice position announced at the 1992 annual meeting. Resignations due to policy positions are of less concern to officials than those brought on by the persistent poor performance of the economy.

Blame it on the boomers; despite fiscal fitness, House changes dues policy to meet surge of seniors
Article Abstract:
The ABA enjoyed robust fiscal health in 1998 and its starting at such a time a scale-back of its long-time dues waiver for senior association members had many members of the House of Delegates up in arms. Proponents countered with the argument that such a move was necessary for the long-term fiscal health of the organization and that the issue must be addressed before the baby boomers qualify for the waiver.
