Why play-by-play coverage strikes out for lawyers
Article Abstract:
Most modern legal journalism disserves both the public and the legal profession by explaining inadequately how the law works and why lawyers and others involved do what they do. Anthony Lewis' landmark book 'Gideon's Trumpet' and the current TV shows 'Picket Fences,' 'Murder One,' and 'Chicago Hope' do a better job by emphasizing and explaining the major points. Legal journalism should unite narrative and analysis, place ideas at the center of the story, and require journalists trained in the law to reach further.

The jagged edge
Article Abstract:
Jeffrey Zander, whose military career ended with a court-martial, was guilty of many things during its course. He pretended to be a qualified lawyer for many years, even though he had never passed the bar, and was admitted to the Judge Advocate General's Corps under these false pretenses. Zander's scam came to an end during an investigation for ineffective assistance of counsel. Zander also awarded himself many medals he had never earned.
