Women take the bar group helm; gains continue at state and local levels
Article Abstract:
Two prominent women attorneys, Patricia Seitz and M. Colleen McHugh, were recently elected to leadership jobs in the Florida Bar and the State Bar of Texas. The ABA's Commission on Women reports that at least 20 women working as presidents of state and local bars. According to the commission, two factors contribute to these increased numbers: the growing number of women attorneys and the fact that they have worked long enough to have some clout in their profession. However, female candidates have more trouble raising campaign funds and taking time off to campaign than their male colleagues.

State's 60 percent cut at issue
Article Abstract:
A Florida law which requires 60% of all punitive damage awards go to the state is to be challenged before the Florida Supreme Court. Attorney Bernard B. Weksler claims the law deprives both him and his client of property without compensation, in violation of the state constitution. Weksler also holds the law violates due process. The damage-sharing law has been challenged unsuccessfully in Florida appellate courts.

State bars try reform on election
Article Abstract:
Both the Florida and Texas state bars have adopted election reforms, hoping to limit costs in their expensive bar elections. Florida has shortened its campaign time and the Texas bar will provide partial reimbursement of campaign expenses. Florida bar presidential candidate Patricia A. Seitz supports the reforms in her state, while opponent John E. Fisher does not.
