A new view of old TV favourites
Article Abstract:
The showpiece for emerging multimedia industry, Milia '97, opens in Cannes in February 1997, but few of the UK's TV companies will be represented there. The UK industry appears to be reluctant to expand into the emerging media despite its global pre-eminence in visual production skills. TV broadcaster Channel 4 is the single UK commercial broadcaster to attract the media industry with its editorial Web site. However, the BBC will be well represented at Milia, where it will display a CD-ROM of highlights, planned to coincide with its 75 birthday.

Fears mar Murdoch swoop on NTL arm
Article Abstract:
NTL will lose control of the key compression technology and modulation systems which it had been developing for digital terrestrial television with the sale of its Advanced Products Division to News International, controlled by Rupert Murdoch. Some observers have expressed concern that News International now has a large presence in conditional access systems, broadcasting and the production of set-top boxes. The company is now under pressure to clarify the situation regarding the future of DTT.

Papers move to allay cross-ownership fears
Article Abstract:
The relaxation of cross-media ownership regulations will not give the largest national newspaper groups in the UK too much influence, according to the British Media Industry Group (BMIG), which represents The Telegraph, Associated Newspapers, Pearson and Guardian Media Group. This follows recent reports that the government is unwilling to make radical changes to the current regulations, which state that national newspaper groups can own up to 20% of an ITV franchisee.
