BBC Online wins permanent status after consultation
Article Abstract:
BBC has received permission from Media Secretary Chris Smith to move BBC Online, a licence fee-funded internet service, from pilot stage to development as the third broadcasting medium alongside TV and radio, after a formal consultation period. The consultation showed that more than 95% of around 1,600 responses from individuals and organizations endorsed the service. The consultation also showed a strong support for the BBC to apply public service principles in the new medium. Meanwhile, BBC Online has yet to find a new chief after the departure of launch controller Ed Briffa in August 1998.

IRG in digital talks with Emap and SRH
Article Abstract:
The Independent Radio Group (IRG), Emap Radio and Scottish Radio Holdings (SRH) are discussing the potential of switching into digital radio or DAB. The idea of becoming a tenant on DAB multiplexes in key markets was conveyed by IRG, said chairman Michael Connolly, and Emap Radio and SRH may be close competitors in operating multiplexes in IRG-penetrated areas such as Scotland and the northwest. Meanwhile, licenses for regional/local DAB operations will be endorsed by the Radio Authority soon after a decision is made in October 1998, as expected, on the national multiplex.
