Oughton wins top post at Eurosport

British Eurosport, the new sports venture of Eurosport in U.K., will get its line-up of shows from Neil Oughton, the new head of broadcasting at the Pan-European sports channel. The appointment of Oughton, formerly with BBC Choice, the new digital channel of BBC, and once sports editor of BBC News, will take effect on Dec. 1, 1998 while the new channel, to be seen on all cable networks and on On Digital, will start its service on Jan. 15, 1999. An agreement with BSkyB for airing the channel on two satellite networks is yet to be concluded as Eurosport aims to create a more regionalized programming for viewers.

On Digital makes GBP 20m new production pledge

On Digital, a digital terrestrial TV operator that is funded by Carlton and Granada, has committed 20 million pounds sterling for the production of original UK programs beginning 1999. Stephen Grabiner, chief executive of On Digital, announced that the series of programs, to be called First On Digital, will be a one-evening-a-month event that will cover a variety of genres, including drama, sport and music. First On Digital will initially run alongside six premium channels as well as 12 basic pay-TV channels.
