BBC drama dives
Article Abstract:
BBC's drama programming takes a dive anew upon the departure by 1997 of Central and Zenith's Charles Denton and LWT's Nick Elliott, who spearheaded a resurgence for the firm's slate of drama programs during the early 1990s. BBC also faces dim prospects for its drama programming slate in 1999, as its smouldering sophomore programs and its old burning-out drama shows do not present much promise for improvement for the year. BBC's decline in terms of drama programming since early 1997 was evident in the firm's line-up of one-off films or mini-series and repeat shows.

Primetime burial ground
Article Abstract:
ITV's 'Coronation Street' and BBC's 'EastEnders' are extremely popular, and it can be hard for another channel to offer a programme which will attract a reasonable number of viewers while these top programmes are being broadcast. Both BBC and ITV have found that the best approach is to offer series which are cheap but reasonably popular. These will particularly attract younger people, especially those living in the south, who are not necessarily fans of soap operas.

A woman's place
Article Abstract:
There are now a number of high-profile women writers for television, but in general women are still under-represented in this sector. Even Channel 4, which aims to encourage the involvement of minorities, has had very few women involved in creating its drama series. The decline in the popularity of situation comedies has not helped this situation, and women writers are now having to seek new openings.
