BBC finalises DST transmission deal
Article Abstract:
BBC concluded its 18-month talks with BSkyB to obtain digital satellite television (DST) distribution for the former's digital services. The deal would make the widescreen digital versions of BBC 2 and BBC 1, the digital versions of the five national radio services of BBC and BBC News 24 available when the DST platform of BSkyB has its soft launch later in June 1998. BBC did not reveal the amount the company will pay BSkyB for distribution, but according to the forecast of independent analysts, much of the 20 million pounds sterling to 30 million pounds sterling that BBC will invest on DST transmission will be paid to BSkyB.

Ex-BBC kids chief plans nursery TV
Article Abstract:
BBC children's former chief, Anna Home, plans to launch a new digital service, The Nursery Channel, which will target children below five years old and their parents. Home, who will become the chair of the proposed station, acknowledged that she has been in negotiations with SDN NTL and United News & Media involving funding and carriage for the channel. Home also noted she hopes to roll out the new service by early 1999 provided everything will run smoothly as planned. Programming will focus on activity-based shows and storytelling with some cartoons.

BBC/Flextech's UK Play targets MTV yoof market
Article Abstract:
BBC and Flextech TV are scheduled to roll out their new digital youth channel called UK Play, an 18-hour-a-day music and cult comedy service targeting 16 to 24 year olds, in October 1998. The channel, which will be carried by BSkyB's digital satellite platform, will be distributed as part of the digital terrestrial offering of On Digital, which will be introduced later in autumn of 1998. It will also be distributed to digital cable operators and will target MTV's 16-24-year-old audience with its specialist music shows and cult cartoons.
