Big three at the crossroads
Article Abstract:
The leading three British television companies of MAI, Carlton and Granada have until the end of 1996 to develop corporate strategies prior to the introduction of a new law which restricts ownership to two terrestrial television licenses. The three companies already practically monopolise the ITV network and have the programming support to exploit new technologies and media opportunities. Granada is the dominant company, with its management claiming the firm's future is as a production base. The corporate strategies of the three companies are examined.

A lack of government support
Article Abstract:
The UK is beginning to be seen as a key location for film and television programme production work, and has attracted interest from Disney, Warner and Fox. However, the government has done very little to encourage the development of this industry, and seems to think that it is less important than others. Indeed, the government is not even willing to enforce European rules to ensure that half of every channel's output is home-produced.

Warring forties
Article Abstract:
Commercial television broadcasting began in the UK in 1955, with the launch of Independent Television. In the forty years since its inception, commercial television and ITV franchises have survived decades of power struggles, mergers and upheavals to emerge in the 1990s leaner and fitter but vulnerable to corporate raiders. A brief history of merger and acquisition activity within commercial television franchises is presented.
