Cutting up the nets
Article Abstract:
The major networks in the US have declined in performance, reporting a 1997-1998 combined ratings average of 28.2% of nearly 100 million US homes, a drop of 1.1 percentage points from the 1996-1997 season. ABC, CBS and NBC saw a decline in viewership, while Fox had its worst annual drop since it began service in the late 1980s. The networks are found to be losing viewers with their offerings and have been feeling pressured due to lack of hit shows, propelling them to go with untried formats. The drop is mainly due to the bigger percentage of viewers in the 35 to 54 age range, dumping most of the shows that cater to the 18 to 34-year-olds.

Drama kings
Article Abstract:
Yorkshire Television is the smallest of the Independent Television companies, but has consistently produced drama programmes which have been instant hits with the public during the 1990s.One of the reasons for the success of the company is that its head of drama, Keith Richardson and Vernon Lawrence have adopted a 'hands-on' approach to new ideals as well as creating a pool of experienced writers, producers and directors. Information on drama from Yorkshire Television is given in table form.
