The genie is out of the bottle: measuring media change in Central and Eastern Europe
Article Abstract:
Western journalistic practices are becoming established in some Central and Eastern European countries. However, this is not yet the case in Russia or Azerbaijan, and it is clear that this will be a lengthy process. This means that it is important to develop a basis on which to assess change in the media of specific Central and Eastern European countries. In some countries, the media are now beginning to put pressure on politicians, while in others politicians still have total control over the media.

Business reporting in Eastern Europe: new markets, new journalism
Article Abstract:
Economics and business reporting is becoming increasingly widespread in Central and Eastern Europe. Publishers now recognize that business and economics pages will attract advertisers wishing to reach educated, wealthy readers. However, some newspapers in Central and Eastern Europe have still not developed the ability to produce lively, interesting economics and business coverage.

Struggles for independent journalism: ten years of learning and teaching, from Poland to Yugoslavia
Article Abstract:
There is still considerable pressure on journalists in some Central and Eastern European countries, with the independent media being restricted in many different ways. The US and other Western countries have given substantial financial assistance to media in the region since 1989, but there are still serious challenges associated with sustaining an independent press in weak, market-driven economies. The safety of journalists throughout the region remains a cause for concern.
