Although British television and radio broadcasters have cut the number of their staff, the gap between the pay of employees and directors has widened. Broadcasters and regulators now have under 40,000 employees, compared to 50, 000 seven years ago. ITN is the television company with the highest average pay per employee, standing at 36,705 pounds sterling per year. Its highest paid director earns 245,000 pounds sterling a year.

He believes the overhaul will bring genuine benefits for BBC output, and the creation of a unified scheduling and commissioning structure will enable the division to manage both analogue and digital licence fee-funded output.

The BBC will be split into six units by 01 April 1997 under the direction of John Birt, director general of the company. The reorganisation will complete the transformation that began with the introduction of Producer Choice nearly three years ago. However it is uncertain how the new look BBC will work in practice.
