The Royal Television Society has launched a bid to remove its image as a traditional organisation run by middle-aged men. It is being led by Paul Jackson, chairman of RTS and Michael Grade, president. The RTS plans to reduce the membership fee and offer a significant reduction to students with the aim of increasing membership above 10% of the industry total. It wants to attract more young people and has recently introduced workshops and masterclasses aimed at expanding its practical appeal.

UK television programme sellers have several difficulties to overcome when selling to Europe and the US. European television stations require programmes which are made up of at least 13 episodes, although UK series tend to consist of 6 episodes. Licensing programme ideas is a positive way for programme makers to overcome the problem of favoured formats. The US market is driven by ideas, which can be developed by home-grown writers, avoiding the need to purchase ready made programmes.
