Charting the indie course
Article Abstract:
Few independent television production companies in the United Kingdom are surviving solely on terrestrial broadcasters' production fees, with 14% of producers surveyed operating at a loss. The terrestrial broadcasters are taking advantage of the market over-supply, with profitability of the independents running at only 6% on average. The smaller companies are the most profitable as they have fewer permanent employees and less overhead costs. The UK's independent television production industry is analysed.

Article Abstract:
The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), like other major television and radio broadcasting companies, has to cut its production costs so that it can compete with the competition, which is proliferating rapidly. It must not, however, lower its high standards for which it is internationally renowned. Cable and satellite stations work towards the quality and format of the terrestials, because audiences can be put off easily if they are presented with a structure that they are unfamiliar with.
