Peter Salmon, the new director of programmes at Channel 4, has already gained considerable respect within the television broadcasting industry for his forthright, often controversial, programmes. He has gained a reputation for being directly involved, and also has the ability to get on very well with many different kinds of people. In his new role, he will be responsible for monitoring Granada's production for outlets including Channel 4 and the BBC.

The fifth man

David Elstein's new appointment as chief executive to British television broadcasting company, Channel 5 Broadcasting (C5), is viewed positively within the industry. Elstein left the satellite television station BSkyB after being rejected from its board. He is the right person to promote C5's ratings, says media chief, Anthony Fry. C5 is struggling to cope with mounting technical costs connected with its broadcasting programme.
